Welcome to our website dedicated to tracking the international recognition status of Kosovo
We are a group of political scientists and legal scholars from the University of Belgrade and Union University. This map is made as part of the wider project Monitoring and Indexing Peace and Security in the Western Balkans (MIND) supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (grant number 7744512).
The issue of Kosovo's status is heavily disputed, and our goal is not to take a stance on whether Kosovo is an independent state or part of Serbia, but rather to monitor whether other states have recognized it. Hence all references to Kosovo on this wesbite shall be understood in full compliance with United Nations Security Council resolution 1244 and without prejudice to the status of Kosovo.
To determine a country's recognition status, we primarily rely on the existence of diplomatic notes, conclusive actions, and verbal statements by governments from the relevant publicly available data and documents obtained through FOIA requests. In cases where the situation is unclear, we label it as such. We acknowledge that our website may not be perfect and that the situation may change, so we welcome any suggestions for improvement or updates. Our aim is to provide accurate information to the best of our knowledge and in good faith. Source of data on population and surface area of countries is United Nations - Department Of Economic and Social Affairs - Statistics Division.
